Verna Mize
Calumet High School - 1940
Defender of Lake Superior
Verna Mize is known as “The person who saved Lake Superior." She single-handedly, and at her own expense, began a petition drive to direct the Federal Government to stop The Reserve Mining Company from dumping 67,000 tons of tailings a day into Lake Superior. In a Court Case that lasted seven years, the U.S. Supreme Court, in 1980, directed Reserve to stop dumping. After 13 years, Verna Mize had won!
