Smith has worked 30 years in Michigan State Government, with both the Legislative and Executive branches. In the House, he was Senior Policy Adviser to the Speaker of the House. He authored the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act. While serving in the Executive Branch, he was Acting Director of the Department of Labor.
