CLK Schools Seeks Bond Renewal to Address Aging Building Systems
Aging heating, ventilation, plumbing, windows, masonry,
lockers, public address systems, and instructional
technology are among the most pressing facility needs
across CLK Schools, where several key building systems
are reaching the end of their useful life.
According to district leaders, these needs have
developed over time as school facilities have served
generations of students and families. The district is
now proposing a $21.85 million bond renewal that would
fund targeted improvements at each school, with a focus
on essential building systems, learning environments,
and long-term facility needs. Voters will consider the
proposal on Tuesday, August 4.
“Many of our
schools have served this community well for decades, but
the reality is that several essential building systems
are aging and need to be addressed,” said Superintendent
Joel Asiala. “This proposal focuses on practical,
necessary improvements that would help us maintain safe,
modern learning environments for many years to come.”
The proposed bond is structured to result in a zero
mill net increase over the prior year’s levy and
therefore would not lead to a property tax increase
above the 2025 rate.
Proposed projects include
replacing outdated heating systems, boilers, piping,
controls, and ventilation systems, as well as renovating
restrooms and locker rooms. Projects would also address
deteriorating windows, masonry, concrete, and structural
elements, while replacing aging lockers, installing new
public address systems, and updating instructional
technology for students and staff.
At CLK
Elementary School, proposed work includes replacing
outdated heating systems, piping, and controls with
modern, energy-efficient equipment. There would also be
upgraded restrooms, improved ventilation in restrooms
and locker rooms, and updated instructional technology
for classrooms.
At Calumet High School, the bond
would support replacement of heating and ventilation
systems, necessary electrical upgrades, renovated locker
rooms and restrooms, new lockers, a new public address
system, exterior improvements, and parking lot
resurfacing and restriping.
Washington Middle
School projects would include replacing heating systems,
boilers, and ventilation systems throughout the
building, along with renovating restrooms and locker
rooms, replacing lockers, and installing a new public
address system. The bond would also address exterior
needs, including windows, masonry and concrete
improvements.
At Horizons Alternative High
School, the proposal includes replacing outdated room
heating units to improve comfort and efficiency.
Across all schools, bond projects would support
districtwide improvements in instructional technology,
including computers, classroom displays, networking
equipment, and other tools intended to enhance
instruction and prepare students for the future.
“Moving ahead with these projects now allows the
district to be proactive rather than reactive,” Asiala
said. “By addressing these needs in an intentional,
strategic, and responsible way, we can avoid more costly
emergency repairs and extend the life of our school
buildings well into the future.”
